Tony Ferguson left Donald Cerrone with gruesome injury before doctor stopped record-setting final UFC win

Tony Ferguson’s final UFC win came in typically brutal fashion six years ago.

‘El Cucuy’ is widely regarded as one of the best lightweights in MMA history – but he was never a true UFC champion after missing out on a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov five times during his iconic career.

Eight losses preceded his release from the UFC and shock move to the Global Fight Leauge.

Tony Ferguson busted up Donald Cerrone in final UFC win

Tony Ferguson never really recovered from the five-round beating he took at UFC 249 in May 2020.

Justin Gaethje pummeled him into submission to begin his record-setting Octagon losing streak.

No one has suffered more than the eight consecutive defeats Ferguson did at the end of his UFC career.

However, until recently, no one had won as many consecutive fights as the 41-year-old did at the peak of his powers.

Edson Barboza, Rafael dos Anjos, Kevin Lee, and Anthony Pettis all fell short against top form Ferguson.

The UFC fan favorite stretched his win streak to a record-setting 12 in a row when he fought Cerrone.

Naturally, the two men brawled throughout their 10-minute fight at UFC 238 in June 2019.

By the end of the second round, Ferguson was in the ascendancy and Cerrone was busted up.

‘Cowboy’ made things worse by blowing out his nose, which caused his damaged eye to swell shut.

Subsequently, the UFC doctor stepped in and waved off the fight to give Ferguson a historic win.

Tony Ferguson loses record to Islam Makhachev

Khabib Nurmagomedov matched his rivals 12-fight lightweight streak before retiring in October 2020.

Since then, Islam Makhachev has outdone both men by picking up 15 wins in a row in the division.

The current lightweight king and pound-for-pound number one is showing no signs of slowing down.

By the time he’s done, it seems likely that the new 155lb win streak to beat will be close to 20.

Makhachev quickly submitted Renato Moicano to prove his greatness at UFC 311 in January.

Ilia Topuria is angling for a shot at the champ after recently vacating his UFC featherweight title.

Only time will tell who UFC boss Dana White will decide to match up against the lightweight GOAT.
