Brian Kelleher lived up to ‘Boom’ nickname by knocking out 8-0 star to shock the world

Brian Kelleher’s UFC career peaked when he brutally knocked out a rising star five years ago.

The 40-fight veteran announced his retirement from MMA in a social media statement on Wednesday.

“I don’t know what’s next but it seems fighting has come to an end,” Kelleher tweeted. “What a journey. Thank you all who have supported me. Love you. BOOM.”

Brain Kelleher destroyed Hunter Azure’s perfect record

After going 4-3 in the Octagon at bantamweight, Kelleher moved up to featherweight in May 2020.

The 38-year-old was matched up with 8-0 prospect Hunter Azure, who seemed like the next big thing.

After impressing on the Contender Series, Azure beat an Ultimate Fighter winner in his UFC debut.

The wrestler outpointed Brad Katona over three rounds to make a great first impression in September 2019.

Next time out, Azure gave a good account of himself and earned a $50,000 Fight of the Night bonus.

However, that cash will have only cushioned the blow of what was an absolutely devastating defeat.

Kelleher knocked out Azure with a monstrous left hand shot in the second round of their fight in Florida.

‘Boom’ lived up to his nickname by dropping two big follow-up bombs to put his opponent out cold and pull off a big upset victory.

What’s Brian Kelleher done lately?

Kelleher went 3-2 in his next five fights before beginning the losing streak that ended his career.

A unanimous decision win over Kevin Croom in January 2022 was the last time he tasted UFC victory.

Since then, Kelleher has lost against Umar Nurmagomedov, Cody Garbrandt, Mario Bautista, and Cody Gibson.

In October, it was reported that the American and 11 other fighters had been cut by the MMA leader.

As recently as two weeks ago, the Kelleher was still posting videos training on the heavy bag and throwing combinations – so fans were somewhat shocked to learn that he was calling it a career.

Thanks for the memories, Brian! Everyone at Bloody Elbow wishes you a happy and healthy retirement.
