‘Highly unusual’… UFC legend slams Ilia Topuria for chasing Islam Makhachev fight

An MMA icon has had enough of Ilia Topuria campaigning to take on Islam Makhachev.

Since knocking out Max Holloway, the Spanish-Georgian has desperately tried to goad the Russian into a fight.

Topuria has even attempted to wind Makhachev up by claiming Dagestanis can’t win hard fights.

However, while ‘El Matador’ would love the contest, a former world title challenger would not.

Chael Sonnen doesn’t want Ilia Topuria to fight Islam Makhachev

While considered one of the best trash talkers of all time, Chael Sonnen is getting a little bit tired of Ilia Topuria relentlessly pursuing Islam Makhachev.

In his opinion, the match-up makes little sense for the reigning lightweight King.

In a video uploaded to his YouTube channel, ‘The American Gangster’ explained: “Why is Ilia Topuria calling out Islam Makhachev for the eighth time in nine days? There is something highly unusual about Ilia Topuria using these opportunities to stay on Islam.

“I cannot begin to believe that something really special for Islam’s fight is that he’s got to fight a 145-pounder. That would be a super fight, [but] it wouldn’t be special for Islam.

“He’s already fought a 145-pounder as a world champion, who was the reigning number one pound-for-pound.

Charles Oliveira hates that fight. Charles is not of the mindset of ‘Let’s fight Islam’. Even if you move onto that, you’re moving onto a rematch. So, there’s just nothing going on at 155. The same can be said for 145.

Ilia Topuria’s next challenge set to be decided as two top contenders are booked to clash in April

While Sonnen isn’t entirely sure about who Topuria could defend his title against next, a recently announced match-up could change everything.

There’s no doubt the champion will be watching the bout, which pits a thunderous puncher against a slick striker in a clash that looks destined to excite.

With the division lacking depth, the winner of the contest, could very well get the next shot at Topuria.
