‘Best in the world’… Debutant makes bold statement following sensational KO win at UFC Vegas 102

Jose Delgado isn’t lacking confidence after impressively ending his UFC debut at UFC Vegas 102.

UFC featherweight prospect Jose Delgado’s promotional debut finished just before the first buzzer at UFC Vegas 102. Delgado, unbeaten in his previous five fights, took on a fellow prospect in Connor Matthews on the preliminary portion of the card.

Delgado stunned Matthews early with a spinning back fist that Matthews inexplicably ate just minutes into the fight. But after smelling blood in the water, Delgado poured on the pressure and dropped Matthews with an overhand right before quickly getting top position.

Just seconds before the end of Round 1, Delgado landed some nasty ground-and-pound against a defenseless Matthews and eventually secured the TKO finish. It was a memorable debut for Delgado after earning a spot in the promotion via Dana White’s Contender Series in August.

Jose Delgado declares he’s the ‘best in the world’ after UFC debut finish

Due to time constraints on the UFC Vegas 102 broadcast, Delgado didn’t get a long post-fight interview with either Daniel Cormier after the fight was official. But that didn’t stop Delgado from getting a chilling message out to his family, friends, and new fans.

As the referee attended to Matthews, Delgado stomped around the Octagon and yelled “I’m the best in the world!” to those sitting cageside. As referee Dan Miragliotta raised Delgado’s hand, he continued the proclamation and didn’t hold back in his confident stance.

Delgado has plenty of reasons to feel confident in his fighting future after his UFC Vegas 102 debut. He earned a wild knee knockout on DWCS in August against Ernie Juarez to secure a contract from UFC CEO Dana White.

Before DWCS, Delgado enjoyed brief stints in LFA, United Fight League, and Tuff-N-Uff during his professional career.

Jose Delgado’s debut capped off the headline-making UFC Vegas 102 prelims

Delgado’s impressive win wasn’t the only highlight-reel moment on the UFC Vegas 102 prelims. UFC light heavyweight Johnny Walker’s younger brother, Valter, earned a heel-hook submission win to win his second consecutive UFC outing.

UFC welterweight Gabriel Bonfim continued his rapid ascent by putting Khaos Williams to sleep with a D’Arce choke. UFC bantamweight Julia Avila also announced her retirement after a decisive loss to Jacqueline Cavalcanti by unanimous decision.

UFC Vegas 102 is headlined by a middleweight clash between Jared Cannonier and Gregory Rodrigues.
