Sean Strickland could take another L with UFC Vegas 102 star in touching distance of coveted record

It’s been a tough week for former middleweight champion Sean Strickland, who might be about to lose his silver medal spot on an all-time UFC record list this weekend.

After Dricus Du Plessis beat Strickland to retain the 185lb title down under, his head coach at Xtreme Couture would come out to critique his star pupil’s performance as “uninspired”.

The former champion would then take his second loss of the week; admitting that it was unlikely that Eric Nicksick would be in his corner again after those comments – unfortunately for ‘Tarzan’, he might be in for a third L in quick succession.

UFC Vegas 102 star could surpass Sean Strickland on all-time record list

UFC Vegas 102 goes down this weekend, with the Fight Night card headlined by middleweight contenders Jared ‘Killa Gorilla’ Cannonier and Gregory ‘Robocop’ Rodrigues.

It’s a remarkably solid Apex showing, with the likes of Calvin Kattar and Edmen Shahbazyan set to compete – on the UFC Vegas 102 prelims, there’s also a promotional veteran who’s hoping to take Sean Strickland’s spot on an all-time record list.

Angela ‘Overkill’ Hill remains one of the most experienced and popular female fighters on the roster; and could be set to overtake Strickland in terms of all-time significant strikes landed this weekend.

Ahead of UFC Vegas 102, Hill is in third place having landed 2036 significant strikes in her UFC tenure; she’s just 161 significant strikes behind Strickland, who retains second with 2197.

That might be a tough ask for ‘Overkill’, although she certainly has the skills to surpass ‘Tarzan’ as her record for most significant strikes landed in a single UFC fight stands at 182 (vs Emily Ducote in 2022).

Both Hill and Strickland are chasing Max Holloway, who leads this all-time category with 3457 significant strikes landed.

Hill could also surpass legendary former champions Kamaru Usman and Frankie Edgar this weekend in terms of the most strikes landed in UFC history – Strickland remains only five strikes behind Hill in this category.

Angela Hill takes on Ketlen Souza at UFC Fight Night: Cannonier vs Rodrigues

Angela Hill faces Brazilian Ketlen Souza on the prelims of UFC Vegas 102 and ahead of the event, spoke with UFC News about the matchup.

“I’m excited that I get to fight someone who’s new to the division, who’s kinda green and coming off a big win… There’s a lot that I can take advantage of with her skillset, with the fact that I’m a lot more experienced.”

Hill secured a ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus against Luana Pinheiro in May 2024, but lost her last fight via unanimous decision to Tabatha Ricci in August – now, she’s desperate to get back to winning ways.

“I want to get a finish, I want to have a big win, I want to be looking at the Top 10 for my next matchup and do as much as possible this year; I want to fight the best in the world and there’s still a handful who I’ve not been able to fight yet.”

Souza enters UFC Vegas 102 on the back of a two-fight winning streak, including an impressive first-round submission win over Yazmin Jauregui at UFC 306: O’Malley vs Dvalishvili.

UFC Vegas 102 goes down live from The Apex on Saturday, February 15.
