‘Change my mind’… Renato Moicano sparks fan debate with controversial take on heavyweight fighters

Renato Moicano thinks the heavyweight division should be thinner than it already is.

Francis Ngannou, Jon Jones, and Tom Aspinall are driving excitement in heavyweight MMA, but there’s a distinct lack of quality opposition for them to face.

Even in the UFC, the talent pool is shallow due to the lack of big men in the sport.

Moicano has now controversially suggested there should be even fewer heavyweights in MMA.

Renato Moicano divides fans with heavyweight opinion

On Saturday night, during UFC Edmonton, Moicano took to social media to voice his opinion on the heavyweight division, which he thinks is overrun with overweight 205lbs fighters.

The lightweight contender shared his take on X – formerly known as Twitter – and invited fans to debate him on the subject.

Moicano tweeted: “Most of heavyweights could be 205!!! If they were disciplined… change my mind.”

Fans flooded his comment section with their views on MMA heavyweights.

Some agreed with ‘Money’, while others felt he was being a bit harsh.

One person replied: “You’re not wrong.”

Another said: “You right, but not Tom Aspinall. Or anyone who looks muscular.”

Someone else commented: “Really, some of them hardly make 265, yet you recommend 205 for them?”

A fourth person added: “THE LEVEL OF DISHESPECT MY BROTHER.”

What’s next for Renato Moicano?

Renato Moicano has become an unlikely title contender at 155lbs. After losing three times when he fought elite featherweight fighters, it seemed like it would be a similar story when he fell to defeats against Rafael dos Anjos and Rafael Fiziev at lightweight.

However, he’s since put together a four-fight win streak, which includes back-to-back knockout victories against top contenders Jalin Turner and Benoit Saint-Denis, who he beat despite nursing a severe shoulder injury.

Moicano is now ranked 10th in the UFC’s most stacked weight class and looking forward to facing some of the biggest names in MMA. Paddy Pimblett appears to be the frontrunner to face him next.

“Please don’t accept the fight,” Moicano said in a message to Pimblett after his latest win. “I’m going to hurt you. I’m going to elbow your skull.”

Pimblett is a massive star, but the jury is still out on his title credentials. Despite winning six consecutive fights in the UFC and choking out Bobby Green in one round, some people are convinced he will get found out against top 10 opposition.

Moicano is excited about the attention he’ll get by fighting ‘The Baddy’.

He added: “I think it’s going to be a huge exposure. Right now, I’m looking for exposure. I’m looking for cameras because I’ve been in the UFC for 10 years.

“This year will be 10 years. Three years ago, nobody knew me. Nobody knew me, and I always work hard. I always have put in the work. But it doesn’t matter if you’re the best fighter in the world nobody knows.

“I want more cameras. I want more people talking about my name in MMA because that way I can bring more attention, and I can make my case to fight for the belt eventually.”
