Chael Sonnen explains why he believes Robert Whittaker will beat Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 308

Robert Whittaker and Khamzat Chimaev are just days away from going to war in a fight that has been brewing for a while.

The Swedish icon has long been considered as the future of the 185-pound division, thus when his fight with ‘The Reaper’ was first announced for UFC Saudi Arabia, On June 22, many expected the formidable grappler to take his next step towards greatness.

Alas, due to illness, Chimaev had to withdraw from the contest, which gave Whittaker an opportunity to remind everyone of just how good he is with a beautiful knockout victory over Ikram Aliskerov.

Now, the MMA community is split over which way the clash is going to go, with each man possessing top-level skills.

However, Chael Sonnen is confident that the Australian will claim the victory in a fight entertaining enough to go down in history.

In a video uploaded to his YouTube channel, the Oregon native asserted: “Robert Whittaker is a son of a buck to take down—ask Yoel Romero. For ten rounds, he got ‘Bobby Knuckles’ down twice.

“The likelihood of [Chimaev] getting him down over and over again, round after round, really is very small. And what happens then? Well, Chimaev got in a fisticuffs with Gilbert Burns and turned out to do some things we didn’t know he could do.

“Burns hurt him one time, Chimaev got those legs back under him and started returning fire, it turned into a dog fight. I’m just sharing for you; this is a very special match.

“I think it is possible that one guy whips the other guy’s a**, goes right through him. But I think that is much more likely to be Robert Whittaker than it is Chimaev. We’ve got a long drawn-out brawl here.”

Israel Adesanya predicts shock ‘late finish’ when Robert Whittaker fights Khamzat Chimaev

Like the rest of the fight community, Sonnen is positively salivating at the prospect of watching two icons of the sport battle it out.

And it seems, former middleweight world champion, Israel Adesanya, is just as intrigued by the match-up.

‘The Last Stylebender’ can’t wait for the bout, and is expecting one of the fighters to claim a late stoppage.

But which man does he think will be walking away with the victory?
