Following his unsuccessful title challenge at UFC 302, Dustin Poirier heavily hinted at retirement despite still being near enough at the top of his game.
After attempting to win the undisputed UFC lightweight title three times and coming up short, Dustin Poirier thought that it was time to call an end to his career this past June.
Despite that, after months on the sideline and having time to think about it, ‘The Diamond’ quickly teased that he would come back for one more fight.

Dustin Poirier lays out his perfect retirement plan as he teases fight news
With the 35-year-old admitting he will fight once more, there are plenty of potential fights for the future Hall of Famer to bow out of his tremendous career.
One name that has consistently been pitched to Poirier, is Justin Gaethje. The two have fought on two previous occasions, both picking up one win each in two utterly incredible fights.
Rumors recently surfaced of a possible PPV heading to Louisiana in the first quarter of next year, and ‘The Diamond’ has highlighted that as a perfect retirement story.
“I will fight again. It’s just how this thing unfolds. I will see when I do retire. I could be uno mas (one more) or could be dos mas (two more),” Poirier said on The Ariel Helwani Show.
“I had a good meeting at the UFC headquarters. I was out there with Celsius at a trade show and had a good meeting. My goal is to get an event here in Louisiana, whether that’s Lafayette or New Orleans. I want to lay the gloves down where I started fighting, that’s my goal.
“It’s just my opponent availability and what makes sense… My goal is to take my gloves off in Louisiana and retire at home,” Poirier continued.
When Poirier and Gaethje met in 2018, the fight took place in Glendale, Arizona, ‘The Highlight’s’ hometown. Poirier believes Gaethje owes him one by fighting him in Louisiana.
“Me and Gaethje are 1-1, I would love to do the last fight with him in Louisiana. Our first fight was in his backyard, our second fight was in neutral ground, the third one, let’s do it in my backyard,” he suggested.

Poirier discussed 4-man BMF tournament with Dana White
An idea that was recently posed by Poirier was a four-man tournament for the BMF title.
The initial bracket included himself, Gaethje, Dan Hooker, and Max Holloway, and it is something the fans have gotten behind, calling for it to happen.
The Louisianan admitted that he has spoken to Dana White regarding the idea and that it could actually come to fruition.
“I spoke to Dana a few days ago when I was in Vegas and he didn’t understand that I was on about a one-night tournament, he thought it was gonna be a few months, he doesn’t think any athletic commission would sanction a one-night tournament.
“It seemed like he was (open to the idea) like he was laughing and smiling and on board with it,” Poirier continued.
