UFC champion Tom Aspinall can ‘see the fire’ back in Anthony Joshua’s eyes ahead of huge 96,000 boxing fight at Wembley

With no UFC action this weekend, the attention of the entire combat sports world will be firmly fixed on Wembley Stadium for an all-British heavyweight showdown between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois.

Superstar Anthony Joshua returns to the ring this weekend as he looks to join an elite group of fighters who have won a heavyweight title three times – it’s Riyadh Season Wembley Edition: Joshua vs Dubois.

UFC champion Tom Aspinall talks Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois

Speaking via the latest episode of Fight Lab, interim UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall was asked about his thoughts on this weekend’s enormous boxing clash at Wembley Stadium.

“I fancy that – I love watching the heavyweights mate, very interesting fight I reckon, a good tear up between two massive guys: Where’s Joshua at in this point in his career against a young guy in Daniel Dubois?”

Whilst Aspinall is “really looking forward” to the two British juggernauts throwing down in front of a crowd expected to come in at around 96,000 people, he does see the fight itself going in Joshua’s favor – especially following his recent performances.

“I think with what Joshua has done recently, he really has [reignited interest] and I think that his new training situation is obviously working for him with Ben Davison.

“Not only that, I think mentally something has switched in there – I don’t know him personally, but you can really see the fire in him now whereas before, especially after his losses though Usyk, he was a bit gun-shy.”

Following his split decision loss to Oleksandr Usyk in their 2022 rematch, AJ won a unanimous decision over Jermaine Franklin and since that bout, has gone on a fabulous knockout streak.

That streak includes finishes over Robert Helenius (round 7), Otto Wallin (Round 5), and Francis Ngannou (round 2) – simply put, AJ is putting on the pressure and ending contests with thunderous right hands earlier and earlier each fight.

“He did look a little bit gun-shy [before] and now he’s like ‘Right, here I am, we’re having it and you’re going to sleep’,” stated the fellow KO artist, who ended his breakdown by noting that a key part of Joshua’s resurgence has come in partial thanks to his long-term rival, Tyson Fury.

“I think his [Joshua] performance against Francis Ngannou, after what Ngannou did to Fury, it was mega-impressive,” with Fury only barely scrapping past the former UFC heavyweight champion in 2023.
