Chimaev ascended to the top of the UFC Middleweight division at UFC 319 when he beat Dricus du Plessis to become UFC Middleweight champion.

At UFC 294 on October 21, 2023, Khamzat Chimaev welcomed the former UFC welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, to the middleweight division in a late-notice fight after Paulo Costa withdrew from his scheduled fight against Chimaev.
