‘Tough pill to swallow’… UFC welterweight contender provides unfortunate injury update amid UFC 305 rumors

UFC welterweight contender Jack Della Maddalena has provided an extremely unfortunate injury update ahead of UFC 305 on August 18th.

After the promotion announced UFC 305 on August 18th would mark their return to Perth, Australia, number five ranked welterweight, Jack Della Maddalena, made it clear he wanted to make his homecoming.

The 27-year-old fought at UFC 299 this past March, picking up the biggest win of his career thus far, finishing former welterweight title contender, Gilbert Burns, in the third round.

Jack Della Maddalena provides an unfortunate injury update

In the first round of his blockbuster win over the Brazilian, Della Maddalena broke his arm but somehow continued and rallied from behind to secure the finish.

Despite suffering a broken arm, the Australian called for a number-one contender fight against Shavkat Rakhmonov in Perth, knowing that he will have likely recovered from the injury by August.

Unfortunately, though, since then Della Maddalena has faced problem after problem and has provided an update on his continuous injury.

“Had surgery on my arm 1 week after (UFC) 299. 10 days later my wound had begun splitting which was indicative of infection.” Della Maddalena revealed in a post on Instagram.

“Went in for surgery 2 as believed to be infection present, bone cleaned, plate replaced, stayed in the hospital for 9 days on IV antibiotics then moved to oral antibiotics.” he added.

After undergoing a second surgery on the broken arm, the 27-year-old believed he would then be in recovery and things would improve, but things continued to go wrong.

“Thought the infection was under control, the wound itself had a couple of abscesses pop up over a 5-week period which had been cut and drained which had bacteria present. I had further surgery yesterday to remove infected tissue and unfortunately some infected bone.” Della Maddalena stated.

With UFC 305 less than three months away, the Australian has revealed that he will unfortunately not be able to compete as he is scheduled for another surgery within the next few weeks.

“Unfortunately this means I won’t be competing at UFC 305 in Perth, which is a tough pill to swallow. At the moment I am focused on recovery, ridding my body of infection and allowing the bone to mend.

“I am still motivated to compete before the year’s end in the fight I believe is the toughest and makes the most sense.” he added.

There is currently only one fight confirmed for the UFC’s return to Perth, and that is a lightweight fight between Tom Nolan and Alex Reyes.

Dricus Du Plessis is rumored to defend his middleweight title against Israel Adesanya in the main event, however, the promotion has yet to announce the bout.
