UFC women’s flyweight fighter vents frustration with matchmakers as she declares it’s ‘hard to make a living’

UFC women’s flyweight contender Miranda Maverick has vented her frustration with the matchmakers ahead of her fight against Tracy Cortez on July 20th.

Miranda Maverick is preparing to take on Tracy Cortez at the UFC’s Fight Night event on July 20th, as she looks to make it three wins in a row.

Cortez on the other hand is riding a five-fight win streak and put on a career-best performance in her last outing against Jasmine Jasudavicius in September last year.

Since signing with the promotion back in 2020, ‘Fear The’ Maverick has fought nine times but she doesn’t feel like two fights a year is enough.

Miranda Maverick admits it’s ‘hard to make a living’ as she blames matchmakers

The 26-year-old has vented her frustration with the UFC matchmakers, blaming them for only getting her two fights a year, declaring that ideally, she would want more.

“I wish I fought even more, I think two fights a year is pretty pitiful, I think three fights a year isn’t that great and I wish us as fighters were the ones that got to choose that.” Maverick told MMAJunkie.

“As most people know, some people don’t, the matchmakers are the ones that decide that they’re the ones that call us and offer us fights, I’m always bugging the matchmakers like hey ready for short notice fights, 3-day notice, 5-day notice or 2-week notice, I’m ready to go.” she added.

Maverick went on to admit that it is ‘hard to make a living’ by only fighting twice a year, despite fighting at the level she has been fighting at.

“I think me showing that (I’m ready for those short notice fights) has made me more active by them offering me more, but man, it’s hard to make a living even at the level I’m at when they only offer me two fights a year.” Maverick revealed.

Maverick believes ‘pretty girl on Instagram’ shouldn’t be ranked

The 26-year-old was in the top 15 at one point but isn’t currently ranked, and is hoping that come July 20th, she can take Cortez’s spot at rank 11.

Despite Cortez being on an impressive five-fight win streak and picking up wins over the likes of Erin Blanchfield and the aforementioned Jasudavicius, Maverick believes the Mexican is only ranked because she is a ‘pretty girl on Instagram’.

“I think politics have a lot to do with fighting, she’s that pretty girl on Instagram and everything else and I think that’s part of the reason she’s still ranked to begin with.

“She’s a very inactive fighter, hasn’t really fought anyone ranked and she’s still been ranked for a long period of time, so I wouldn’t doubt if I (beat) her, she remains in the top 12, and I get bumped up to 12 or 13 myself.” Maverick added.

Since 2020, Cortez has only fought once a year and has withdrawn from two bouts in 2021 and 2022 due to medical issues.
