‘I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before’… Reason for bizarre stoppage of UFC 301 featherweight fight revealed

A featherweight fight between Jack Shore and Joanderson Brito saw off the UFC 301 prelims, but it didn’t end as many expected it would.

Welshman, Jack Shore was looking to score his second win in a row at featherweight, following his move up from bantamweight two years ago.

Joanderson Brito on the other hand was coming in on a four-fight win streak and was seemingly close to a spot in the 145lb rankings.

Doctor stoppage explained after bizarre injury in the featured prelim fight

The Brazilian scored a dominant opening round, landing several crushing leg kicks to Jack Shore’s left leg. After eating a few of Brito’s calf kicks, the Welshman was clearly compromised as he struggled to put weight on his leg.

Despite that, Shore made it to the stool and was going to see a round two.

Seeing so much success with the calf kick in round one, Brito went back to it in round two, causing severe damage to the leg of ‘Tank’. UFC commentator, Daniel Cormier, commented on the broadcast saying he doesn’t think he’s ever seen an injury like it before.

The left leg of the 29-year-old began to bleed and visibly swell up as ‘Tubarao’ pushed him against the cage. The referee in charge, Joao Claudio Soares decided to halt the action and call the doctor in to check on the injured leg of Shore.

After prodding and poking at the deep gash on the Welshman’s leg, the doctor surprisingly waved the fight off.

Shortly after the fight, Jon Anik announced on the UFC broadcast, that the doctor explained that he suspects Shore has a broken leg, and that is why he waved the fight off.

Social media reacts to Jack Shore’s leg injury

@FXStrypes commented on X: “How many times have you seen that before, stoppage because of a leaking leg?”

Calf kick stoppages have of course happened before, with Jose Aldo and Jonathan Martinez both having scored stoppages with this method, but an injury of this sort is an extremely rare occurrence.

@Dan__220 commented: “Still no idea why that’s been stopped…”

Joanderson Brito moved to five wins in a row as he closes in on a fight inside the featherweight top 15.

Jack Shore’s head coach weighs in on doctor stoppage

Following the fight, Jack Shore’s head coach, Richard Shore has taken to X, venting his frustration with the stoppage of his son’s fight in the UFC 301 featured prelim bout.

The Welsh coach even compared the situation to Gregory Rodrigues’ brutal cut that he suffered against Chid Njokuani, stating that if that fight wasn’t stopped because of Rodrigues’ cut, then Shore’s shouldn’t have been because of the cut on his shin.

“Well, what can we say? Ref stops the fight because of the doctor’s opinion on a cut shin. The doctor stops the fight. I kick off and say it’s a cut on the shin we can continue. Jack asks to continue.

“We get taken to hospital, have an X-ray and no fracture. A couple of stitches and sent us home. Let fighters fight. Awful way to end a fight, Jack is devastated.” Shore added.
