Maycee Barber spent 9 days in hospital during ‘very scary’ experience immediately after UFC 299

Maycee Barber continued her highly impressive run at UFC 299 with a win against Katlyn Cerminara.

What followed was a ‘very scary’ experience for ‘The Future’ as her next battle came far quicker than she expected, and it was a battle with her health.

Maycee Barber’s big UFC 299 win over Cerminara

The 25-year-old extended her win streak to six in a row and with her recent win, she cracked the top five of the women’s flyweight rankings.

Despite her having picked up impressive victories prior to her fight with Cerminara, the win over the long-time ranked striker did a lot for her title aspirations moving forward.

Maycee Barber didn’t sustain any injuries during the three-round domination against Katlyn Cerminara, but after the fight, she spent an unexpected amount of time in the hospital, being treated for an infection that the doctors thought could’ve been Strep A or staph infection.

Maycee Barber details ‘very scary’ nine-day hospital experience

In a post on her Instagram, Barber shared her hospital experience that ensued following her win on March 9th.

“Well the past few weeks were quite the ride and included lots of highs and lots of lows” Barber explained.

“Following my fight, I spent 9 days in the hospital being tested and treated for an infection that they thought was a mix of different things from Strep A to staph infection. Being in the hospital and still not having a definitive answer while battling a 105-degree fever for days, having extremely low blood pressure, HR, and oxygen was incredibly hard.” the 25-year-old added.

Unfortunately for Barber, her condition worsened despite being in the hospital and being treated, as her fever led to her developing pneumonia.

“Despite having multiple IV antibiotics and medications over the course of several days, they were unable to get my fever to drop which eventually led to me developing pneumonia. It definitely wasn’t what I had planned and was honestly very scary at times.” Barber said.

After her win at UFC 299, Barber called for a rematch with the current flyweight Queen, Alexa Grasso, but since then it has been announced that Grasso will rematch Valentina Shevchenko as they coach the next season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Following Rose Namajunas‘ win this past Saturday, she called for a fight with the ‘savage’ Barber’ with that being a potential next fight for both.

Barber ended her Instagram post update by saying that she is seeing her recent health struggle as ‘another piece of the puzzle of life’, with the flyweight hopefully on the road to recovery.
