Michael ‘Venom’ Page calls for UFC Manchester matchup with undefeated welterweight

Michael ‘Venom’ Page has an ideal opponent in mind following his successful UFC debut earlier this month at UFC 299, where he dominated Kevin Holland.

The UFC 299 win saw Michael Page debut at rank 13 in the welterweight division, with him looking for another big win before a possible title shot. Before his fight with Kevin Holland, ‘Venom’ Page admitted his desire to fight current welterweight king, Leon Edwards, in a stadium in the UK.

Michael Page’s highly anticipated UFC debut came quite late in his MMA career, with the welterweight now being 36-years-old. Despite that, from his performance against Kevin Holland, he showed that he can emerge as a title contender in the UFC’s 170lb division.

Before Page’s UFC 299 fight, fellow welterweight Ian Machado Garry, told the media at the UFC 298 media day, that there was ‘no chance’ Page was going to get past ‘The Trailblazer’ when asked if he saw ‘MVP’ as a future opponent.

Since then, the London Shootfighters product has told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, that he would like to fight Garry next at the UFC’s rumored July event in Manchester, because of the Irishman’s previous comment.

“I think the (fight) that probably makes the most sense is Ian (Machado) Garry considering he thought that I wasn’t even going to get past Kevin (Holland). He was very dismissive which is fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinion there’s no need to be angry about it, but now I’ve got past (Holland) then maybe you (Garry) can stop me.

“In the UK as well it’s perfect, that would be a lot of noise there, I think that’s a good fight. He’s ranked seventh and seven is my lucky number.” Page added.

Other possible matchups for Michael ‘Venom’ Page

Colby Covington and Ian Machado Garry are currently locked in a war of words on social media, with both 170lbers trying to build hype around that possible fight. This leaves the possibility of Page vs Garry, slightly in doubt.

UFC commentator, Michael Bisping, said a matchup between Page and Garry should happen next because it makes sense for both fighters.

MMA fans have been calling for a matchup between Michael Page and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson for years, even before Page signed with the UFC. That is a fight that Page has no interest in though, as he said it wouldn’t be as exciting as fans expect it to be.

Vicente Luque is another possible opponent for Michael Page, and he has previously mentioned that possible matchup himself.

The UFC’s return to the UK has been rumored for this coming July, with the promotion possibly coming to Manchester to hold an event, instead of London.
