‘MVP’ breaks down why Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson clash would not be exciting fight fans hope for

Michael ‘Venom’ Page came out victorious in his highly anticipated UFC debut, dominating Kevin Holland at UFC 299 this past Saturday.

The 36-year-old finally made the move over to the UFC earlier this year, and it was announced shortly after that his debut would come against Kevin Holland.

Even when ‘Venom’ Page was fighting in Bellator, MMA fans have fantasized for several years about a possible matchup between him and fellow Karate specialist, Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. Because the two were fighting for different promotions, it wasn’t able to come to fruition.

Now ‘MVP’ is fighting under the UFC banner, there is a possibility that the fans get the matchup they’ve been craving for years.

Stephen Thompson’s last fight came in December last year at UFC 296, where he was submitted by streaking contender, Shavkat Rakhmonov.

The 41-year-old is at a stage in his career where he will likely only take fights that excite him and that are good stylistic matchups for the striker.

Michael ‘Venom’ Page talks possible Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson matchup

From the outside looking in, the majority of MMA fans love the idea of ‘MVP vs ‘Wonderboy’ because of the fact they are both incredibly talented strikers.

Despite that, Page has offered his opinion of the matchup from a tactical point of view. He told Ariel Helwani on ‘The MMA Hour’ that ‘two positives don’t always make a positive’.

“It’s weird because obviously, I’ve been hearing for years before I even got to the UFC and I always tell people the same thing, two positives don’t always make a positive.

“What will be a great fight for me and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, will look like a terrible fight for everyone else because we’ll go back into auto-pilot of our point-scoring system and there’s a lot of battles that happen without anything really happening.” Page added.

Collectively between them, ‘MVP’ and ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson have scored 20 wins by knockout.

“As soon as I’m about to throw that punch, I can sense that he’s got that counter ready and I might break away. So there’s going to be a lot of not much happening in my opinion. I could also be wrong and it could be an amazing fight but from my experience fighting high-level points fighters, it slows everything down.” Page said.

‘MVP’ has already talked about a potential fight with current champion, Leon Edwards, but admitted he is likely a few fights away from that possible fight.
