Brazilian news outlet G1 reports that 2017 IBJJF BJJ world champion Erberth Santos has been arrested in connection with a series of shocking crimes in his home country. Alongside fellow athlete Andre Pessoa, the BJJ champ has been charged with multiple counts of rape and robbery in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Furthermore, alongside their arrest, according to G1’s report, Santos and Pessoa have confessed to the crimes following their capture in Boituva, in the state of Sao Paulo. According to the police investigation, the pair has raped at least four women, perpetrating their crimes with extreme violence—including tying up, threatening and physically abusing the victims. The pair also had 26 cell phones, knives and firearms at the moment of their arrest.

Both men are currently in custody awaiting trail. A court date has not been revealed at this time.

BJJ world champion Erberth Santos has a history of violent aggression in competition

This is not the first time Santos has been involved with violent scandals. In 2015 and 2017, the 29-year-old hit an opponent during a BJJ competition with an elbow, which led to altercations both times. In 2018, the Brazilian allegedly kicked opponent Tommy Langaker in the face moments before being submitted at the IBJJF European Championship.

In 2019, in a match against BJJ star Felipe ‘Preguica’ Pena, Santos once again showed his unhinged tendencies. After seemingly suffering a knee injury in the match, and getting booed, the grappler ran towards the crowed and started a massive brawl with the attending fans. The bout ended up being called off and Preguica was given the win.

Erberth Santos de Mesquita, also known by his nickname ‘Dino’ became the super-heavyweight 2017 world champion of the IBJJF (Internation Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) tournament.
