PFL 6 Preview

The 2023 PFL regular season for the promotion continues in Atlanta, Georgia, US with PFL 6 Friday, June 23, 2023. We will be treated to a duo of champions returning to battle this week with both Olivier Aubin-Mercier and Sadibou Sy seeking to get that much closer to another title during PFLs (Professional Fighter’s League) latest show.

Olivier Aubin-Mercier vs. Anthony Romero

‘The Canadian Gangster’ Olivier Aubin-Mercier (18-5-0, 2 KOs, 8 subs), is the 2022 PFL Lightweight Champion. He also formerly fought in the UFC until October 2019, when he became a free agent. He gained notoriety by appearing on The Ultimate Fighter Nations: Canada vs. Australia. Olivier is a judo aficionado, having obtained his black belt at a young age and becoming a two-time junior national champ, as well as a three-time senior national medalist.

He was even a member of the adult national Canadian team, before turning pro in 2011. He also has a black belt in BJJ and a blue belt in Taekwondo. You may have heard of him by one of his other nicknames: ‘The Quebec Kid’, and the ‘Canadian Tuxedo’.

Aubin-Mercier will being going toe-to-toe in the headliner of PFL 6 with fellow Canadian Lightweight, Anthony ‘The Genius’ Romero (12-1-0, 3 KOs, 1 sub). He’s entering this bout on a three-fight win streak, with victories over Tony Caruso, Kenneth Glenn and Nico Echeverry. His top MMA proficiency is in Taekwondo, which ought to make this an interesting match-up. Fighting out of Ontario, Canada he has affiliations with Genius Fitness & MMA for various aspects of his game, Aegis MMA to focus on his striking, and primarily trains with Niagara Top Team.

With a tie at the top of the PFL Lightweight divisional standings this is a chance to break out of the pack. Southpaw, Aubin-Mercier is the more experienced professional fighter, having had ten more fights. He also made his pro debut in 2011, a full six years earlier than Romero, whose first professional fight was in November, 2017. He has fought 22 more professional rounds, 56 to Romero’s 34. If the fight goes to the ground, their records suggest Romero will have a large disadvantage compared to Olivier, who boosts a 34.8% submission rate over Romero’s mere 7.7%.

Sadibou Sy vs. Shane Mitchell

In the PFL 6 Co-Main event, we have rising contender Sadibou ‘The Swedish Denzel Washington’ Sy (14-6-2, 7 KOs), the 36-year-old Senegalese Swede. Sy won the 2022 PFL Welterweight Championship but is lagging in the PFL points so far for the season, seated behind three other fighters despite winning his first fight this year. He will have a surefire banger Welterweight clash against Australia’s Shane ‘AAA’ Mitchell (13-5-0, 8 KOs, 4 subs). ‘Swedish Denzel’ will be coming into the bout on a five-fight win streak, to Mitchell’s recent loss to Nayib López back in April at PFL 3.

Other Notable Bouts on the Card

PFL 6 will see former UFC combatant Shane Burgos (15-4-0) taking on Japanese sensation Yamato Nishikawa (21-4-6). Rounding out the PFL 6 main card are three more bouts, including Magomed Magomedskerimov vs. David Zawada, Welterweight, Magmed Umalatov vs. Nayib López, also at Welterweight, with a Lightweight main card opener showcasing fight veterans, Clay Collard vs. Stevie Ray.

Tale of the Tape

Headlining this PFL 6 event from the Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, USA: Olivier Aubin-Mercier will go toe-to-toe with Anthony Romero, in a 5-round Lightweight clash.
