The UFC has a new Fight Night main event set and ready to go for their August 5th card in Nashville, TN. Set to take place at the Bridgestone Arena, this will be the UFC’s first return to the ‘Music City’ since 2019 and the UFC’s Fight Night headlined by Stephen Thompson vs. Anthony Pettis.

With nine other bouts already announced, the promotion dropped the news on Twitter today that the card will be headlined by a bantamweight fight between top contenders Cory Sandhagen and Umar Nurmagomedov.

Nurmagomedov vs. Sandhagen to headline

Umar Nurmagomedov has taken the bantamweight division by storm since debuting in the Octagon in 2021. After picking up back to back rear-naked choke victories over Sergey Morozov and Brian Kelleher, the Dagestani breezed by Nate Maness to an easy decision.

The biggest victory of his career so far, however, came this past January against Brazilian powerhouse Raoni Barcelos. Expected to give Nurmagomedov his toughest test to date, Barcelos instead found himself on the receiving end of a brutal first round KO, via left hook, just 4:40 into the first round. That win put Nurmagomedov firmly into the bantamweight rankings, and has apparently lined him up for a huge step forward in competition.

A former challenger for the interim bantamweight title against Petr Yan, back in 2021, Sandhagen is currently on a 2-fight winning streak, having beat Song Yadong via KO in September of last year and Marlon Vera via split decision back in March. The Elevation Fight Team talent is 9-3 over his Octagon tenure, having first signed with the UFC back in 2018. A four-time performance bonus winner, Sandhagen has established himself as one of bantamweight’s most thrilling performers, win or lose.
