Aljamain Sterling successfully defend his bantamweight belt against Henry Cejudo this past Saturday at UFC 288, and during his in-cage interview with Joe Rogan — UFC president Dana White brought in his number one contender, Sean O’Malley. Cringe, a coat grab, and near-chaos ensued, and our next 135-pound title fight was clearly defined. Betting odds have officially dropped for a matchup between these two, so let’s go take a look at what they have to say.
Online gambling site SportsBetting.ag has Sterling starting out as a sizable betting favorite over O’Malley. Aljo is on deck with a large -240 moneyline, with a $100 bet at those odds possibly paying out $141.61. As for ‘Sugar,’ he is beginning his betting life against Aljamain with a robust underdog value of +205. Throwing a bill on Sean at that line could bring back a total return of $305.
It’s pretty rare to see Sterling with a moneyline thats costs more than +200. This is actually the first time he’s been this favored since he rocked a -450 line against Augusto Mendes at UFC on FOX 24 in 2017. It’s good to see Aljo finally getting some respect from the oddsmakers here. He’s ran the gauntlet at 135-pounds, and managed to come out it with the belt deservingly strapped around his waist. He did well against Petr Yan’s wrestling, but O’Malley has yet to prove that he can compete with the grappling prowess of an Aljamain Sterling.
