Jorge Masvidal isn’t in trouble with the law again, but it appears someone close to the fight has been taking into police custody following a shooting at the recently retired UFC fighter’s Miami home. Masvidal is currently still awaiting trial in an assault case stemming from an alleged incident between himself and former friend turned rival Colby Covington outside a restaurant in the spring of 2022.
ABC News affiliate Local 10 reports that a member of Jorge Masvidal’s family was involved in an incident with another person inside Masvidal’s residence that escalated and resulted in one person shot in the “upper extremities.” The alleged victim is said to be in stable condition as they were transported to the local hospital.
Masvidal’s father named as potential perpetrator
Fox Sports radio personality Andy Slater added additional details to the report, alleging that Jorge Masvidal’s father has been taken into custody, after shooting someone during an argument. Masvidal was, reportedly not at home when the incident occurred, as he’s in the midst of promoting his latest bare knuckle MMA fight card featuring former TUF champion Roy Nelson.
Jorge Masvidal has his own legal troubles
As aforementioned, Jorge Masvidal is still awaiting his day in court over allegations that he assaulted Colby Covington outside the Papi Steak restaurant on March 21, 2022, just a few short weeks after the two men met inside the Octagon—where Covington thoroughly dominated Masvidal at UFC 272. Facing a felony charge of aggravated battery, along with allegations that he fractured one of Covington’s teeth and left the MMA Masters fighter with lasting head trauma, Masvidal pleaded not guilty in a pre-trial hearing in April of last year.
Masvidal and Covington are expected to finally see their day in court together on May 10th. No word yet if this latest legal drama will pull Masvidal away from his hosting duties for his latest Gamebred FC fight card, taking place on Friday.
