Mendes pressed the action right away, but after Alvarez returned a flurry Chad backed up a bit. Eddie started to come forward, but Mendes was countering. A cut formed around the right eye of Mendes before the end of the round.
The second round opened up with Mendes dropping Alvarez, to which the former UFC answered the 8-count. Alvarez went back to pressuring, but Mendes was still launching hard counters. This was a strong round for Chad.
Alvarez returned the favor to begin the third act, by dropping Mendes, who answered the 8-count. The rest of this round was a bit tentative. Mendes tried to steal back the round, but Eddie pumped his jab till the bell.
The fighters started swinging right away to open the fourth frame, and both men were connecting. As the round went on, Mendes began getting the better of the exchanges. He was using his jab to disrupt Eddie’s rhythm, and then would bring something with a little more heat.
Alvarez pushed the pace to start the final round. He was going after Chad with urgency, and was landing. He continued to pour it on, overwhelming Mendes until he dropped to a knee. Somehow, Mendes stood to his feet, and then clobbered Alvarez with a haymaker that dropped him. What a crazy ending!
