UFC middleweight contender Paulo Costa wants to fight soon and he know who he wants to face, too. In an interview on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour, ‘Borrachinha’ once again made it clear that he wants to take on hot prospect Khamzat Chimaev, but that was not the only name the Brazilian mentioned during the conversation.

Paulo Costa wants Chimaev in June

Though the promotion is still pushing for the fight against Chimaev to take place at UFC 294, which is scheduled for October, the Brazilian remains adamant about fighting one more time before then. In fact, Paulo Costa says he has been trying to get a fight from the UFC for as soon as June, but nothing has come to fruition yet.

“I’m bothering the UFC to schedule a fight before, like June,” Costa said on Monday’s edition of the show. “I think because they have some agreement [with the] Dubai government, so they need to push big fights for there.”

In fact, Costa says that even a match against Chimaev would be welcome. Although Khamzat has recently teased Paulo on Twitter, calling the Brazilian a coward, Borrachinha told Helwani he would still take fight in June, if ‘Borz’ is also game.

“I like [the Chimaev fight],” he said. “I think it’s a good match up. I think has a lot of hype behind this fight; the people want to see that fight. The people always asking me [about] that fight.”

Paulo Costa and Jan Blachowicz could have fought at UFC 288

Having fought defeated former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold back in August 2022, Borrachinha knows it has been a while since he last fought, which is why Costa has been persistent about getting another fight before UFC 294.

Although he was originally involved in a short-notice match against former light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz for UFC 288 on May 6, it seems the bout fell through when one of the parties declined the terms of the fight. On his official Twitter account, the Pole wrote that it was Costa’s fault that he fight had been canceled. Borrachinha, however, tells Helwani a different story.

“So this takes longer, like three days of back and forth, negotiating that one, and then the UFC finally accepted,” Costa said. “They said, ‘Oh, it’s OK, you can fight just at 205 right now [against] Jan, and even if you beat him, you can come back and fight [in] October at middleweight.’ So then the UFC accepted that, and I went [on] to Twitter, and I posted, ‘OK guys, the fight is on, me and the UFC reach the terms, and I think Jan accepted as well.’ So we’re supposed to fight May 6.

“So then, Sunday, surprisingly, Jan declined the fight. He said, ‘No, I don’t want it anymore. I accepted the fight three days ago, but Paulo [hasn’t accepted], so I declined. I didn’t expect that from Jan, but this is a short-notice. So maybe he was not in good shape, maybe he was not training, or even an injury.”

To address Blachowicz’s claims, Costa said the former champion was lied in his tweet. While Jan says Paulo declined the fight, the Brazilian says it was Blachowicz who was not telling the truth. Then, Borrachinha went on to explain all the reasons why he wanted the fight, from being a good opportunity to make money to having another big name on his resume.

“Jan, he’s lying,” Costa said. “I never turned out and fight. Actually, in fact, he is who turned out the fight. I have always been negotiating that fight. For three or four days, I was negotiating with the UFC. I never pulled out the fight. I was actually very happy with that fight.”

“I [told the UFC], ‘Whoa that’s a very good fight,” he added. “I like that matchup. I like the way that Jan fights as well. He fought some guys who came up from middleweight division, like [Luke] Rockhold and ‘Jacare’ [Souza] and Adesanya, and he beat out these guys. So it’s a big opportunity.

“So I love the idea for three reasons: He beat out these guys already; I don’t need to cut a lot of weight to make 205, because I’ve always been training and preparing for [it]; and the third one is a good opportunity to make a lot of money, because of the short notice.”

Paulo Costa has only one win in the last three years

In his last outing, Paulo Costa (14-2) defeated Luke Rockhold via unanimous decision, back in August 2022. The win made the 32-year-old recover from back-to-back losses to Marvin Vettori and champion Israel Adesanya, respectively in October 2021 and September 2020.

The Brazilian’s only other win before the pair of losses took place in August 2019, when Borrachinha defeated veteran Yoel Romero via unanimous decision at UFC 253. The pair earned a ‘Fight of the Night’ bonus for the exciting match.
