The momentum of heavyweight Sergei Pavlovich will be on the line this weekend when he takes on fellow ranked contender Curtis Blaydes on Saturday night at UFC Vegas 71. Their match, which has big implications for the heavyweight standings, will headline a card from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Also this weekend, veterans Brad Tavares and Bobby Green will return to the Octagon to compete on the main card portion of the event.

Pavlovich, Blaydes chase elusive first title shot

UFC Vegas 71 will be the first time that Pavlovich headlines a UFC card. He has skyrocketed up the UFC rankings over the past year, putting together a trio of first-round finish wins in the division. This includes victories over Derrick Lewis and Tai Tuivasa, with both fights lasting under a minute each.

Pavlovich is currently ranked third at heavyweight, making him the highest-ranked name in the division that has never challenged for the heavyweight belt. But before he can get to a title shot, he has to go a maximum of five rounds against one of the better names in the division.

Blaydes also enters the fight this weekend with a series of wins. He has put together three consecutive victories over the past year, including a finish win against Chris Daukaus and a scorecard nod over Jairzinho Rozenstruick. Despite being one of the higher-up names at heavyweight, Blaydes has never challenged for a belt in the division. A win on Saturday would undoubtedly inch him closer to that opportunity.
