The PFL 3 main event was the setting where 2022’s lightweight tournament winner, Olivier Aubin-Mercier, spoiled the promotional debut of ex-UFC fighter, Shane Burgos. The opening round was all striking, which made things close, but OAM moved to his grappling for the second and third rounds to grind out Burgos and advance in PFL’s 155-pound tournament.
Olivier Aubin-Mercier vs. Shane Burgos live play-by-play breakdown
OAM was pressuring first to get things going, but it wasn’t long before Burgos started to lead the dance. The jab of OAM was constant, and was helping him keep Burgos from walking him down. He was also sitting down on his punches, looking to deliver power with every shot. Burgos was attacking the legs of OAM, and none of them were blocked.
The jab remained the primary weapon for OAM to kick start the second round, with Burgos struggling to land clean with his hands. OAM then switched gears and started to grind on Burgos against the fence. He took the back with Burgos still standing, and after a bit he bailed on it in order to snag a takedown. Burgos got back to his feet before the bell, but didn’t score anything meaningful with the little bit of time left.
The final round saw OAM go right back to his grappling, pressing Burgos against the cage. Burgos kept moving, and was landing pitter, but could not shake OAM off of him. OAM took the back standing again, and held on. The crowd started to boo, but OAM was in complete control. Burgos somehow found a way to escape, and blitzed OAM with a violent flurry that him retreating. OAM was able to clinch back up, and that’s where the fight came to a close.
