‘The streets don’t belong to the fake’ – Jorge Masvidal responds to Covington’s callout

If the message coming from Kamaru Usman after his fifth title defense was that he might want to spend some time with his family in the immediate future, Colby Covington seems much more dead set on getting back to action as quickly as possible. Following his unanimous decision loss at UFC 268, Covington had a pair of names on his lips for who he’d like to face next time he steps into the cage.

Those men? Former American Top Team training partners Jorge Masvidal and Dustin Poirier.

“I think the most logical step is the heated rivalry with me and my old roommate, ‘Street Judas’ Masvidal,” Covington told reporters after the event, adding that he wanted to “hold these people accountable for the way they run their mouth in the media…”

For his part, Masvidal is currently scheduled to fight top contender Leon Edwards. That upcoming battle has its own grudgematch history to it, stemming from a backstage encounter between the two at UFC Fight Night: Till vs. Masvidal back in 2019. A war of words quickly escalated to a fist fight, where Masvidal delivered his now famed ‘three piece and a soda,’ setting off months of trash talk between the two over interviews and social media.

Masvidal and Edwards are now scheduled to meet on the UFC 269 PPV card in December, but that doesn’t mean that ‘Gamebred’ didn’t have some spare time on his hands to pen a few responses to Covington’s call-out.

Win or lose against Edwards next month, it seems like exactly the kind of booking the UFC will want to jump on. Now Covington just needs to find a way to lure Dustin Poirier up to 170 lbs.
