Legendary former UFC and WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo is in line for a main event spot towards the end of the year.
Ariel Helwani reported on The MMA Hour that verbal agreements are in place for #5 ranked Aldo to take on #4 contender Rob Font in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas on December 4th. It would be Font’s second straight headlining spot and Aldo’s second at 135 lbs.
Aldo (30-7) is one of MMA’s all-time greats and he has found himself to be quite comfortable dropping from featherweight to bantamweight. After a close loss to Marlon Moraes and a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful title fight vs. Petr Yan, Aldo has bounced back with decision wins over Marlon Vera and Pedro Munhoz. It should be noted that Aldo hasn’t won a five-round main event since his decision over Frankie Edgar in their UFC 200 rematch back in 2016.
Font (19-4) is on a four-fight winning streak, most recently picking apart former champion Cody Garbrandt in a five-round decision back in May. He also has a first-round TKO of Marlon Moraes, as well as decisions over Ricky Simon and current Bellator champion Sergio Pettis. The last time the Massachusetts native experienced defeat was a decision to Raphael Assuncao at UFC 226 in 2018.
Other fights targeted for this UFC Vegas 44 card include Bryan Barberena vs. Matt Brown, Jimmy Crute vs. Jamahal Hill, and Rafael Fiziev vs. Brad Riddell.
