Jake Paul is gearing up to face his second former MMA champion in the boxing ring. On August 29 he will look to go 4-0 in pro boxing when he takes on former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. Woodley will be hoping to fare better than his teammate Ben Askren, who was knocked out by Paul in the first round back in April.
During a press conference for his fight with Woodley ‘Problem Child’ spoke about one of his favourite trolling targets; Conor McGregor.
One of Paul’s latest stunts was creating a $100,000 custom necklace showing McGregor KO’d and holding a bottle of NyQuil. After McGregor was defeated by Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 this weekend, Paul promised to send the bauble over to ‘The Diamond’.
Yesterday Paul said that his interest in fighting McGregor is now waning. However, he claimed, if they did meet in the ring he doesn’t think the Irishman, an 0-1 boxer, would fare very well.
“I think [a fighter with McGregor] could happen,” said Paul (ht bjpenn.com). “I think the funny thing about this journey is I’ve predicted everything that’s happened thus far. 18 months ago when I said I wanted to fight Conor, people laughed at me. Now I’m laughing at Conor with a broken ankle, sitting there in the Octagon, and he needs Jake Paul more than I need him.”
“So, yeah, my offer to Conor is 23 dollars,” continued Paul. “And if we ever fought I would knock those fake-ass teeth right out of his fucking mouth. You know, Dustin Poirier defeated this man, and Dustin Poirier is an amazing fighter, don’t get me wrong, amazing guy, I actually became a fan of his over the weekend. But he’s 5-foot-9, 155 pounds. I’m 6-foot-1, 200 (pounds). So, Conor McGregor would not stand a chance.”
McGregor’s lone pro boxing bout was a 2017 10th round TKO versus Floyd Mayweather Jr. In MMA McGregor is 3-4 since winning the UFC featherweight title from Jose Aldo back in 2015. Over that time span he has been stopped by Nate Diaz, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Poirier (twice).
Prior to this weekend McGregor had largely ignored Paul’s taunts. However, with his future in MMA cloudier than ever, it wouldn’t be that surprising if ‘Notorious’ returned to the ring.
