UFC Vegas 27 results: Rob Font outclasses Cody Garbrandt on the feet in decision win

The top of the UFC Vegas 27 billing was the setting where the promotion’s #3 ranked bantamweight, Rob Font, nearly tripled up on strikes against the former champion, Cody Garbrandt, en route to a dominant decision win. Garbrandt found early success with his takedowns in the opening round, but then Font started to stuff the shots and take over with his pressure and straight strikes. Font just defeated a former title holder to extend his impressive winning streak to four. How long will it be before we see Font in a title fight?

Garbrandt started attacking the calf right away as he used his footwork to address the forward progress of Font. Then, a big 1-2 from Font seemed to briefly sting Garbrandt, but he recovered rather quickly. Garbrandt switched gears and hit a takedown, nearly connecting on a head kick as Font stood up. Another nice right hand got through for Font, prompting the former champ to snag another takedown. Font landed an illegal elbow to the back of the head, to which the ref warned him, and Cody stood up and started swinging.

Garbrandt put Font on his back right away in the second round. Font threatened with a Kimura from the bottom, and used it to scramble back up to his feet. In open space, Font pressed forward behind his volume, as Garbrandt was fighting on the back foot. Font was touching his target with the jab and then following up with his cross. It was quite a strong round for Rob.

Font stayed with his pressure in the third act, and was stuffing the takedown advances of Cody. The jab of Rob was still firing and landing, while Garbrandt continued to struggle to mount offense of his own. He did land a couple of left hooks, but he was spending a lot of time defending.

More pressure came from Font in his first fourth round of his career. Garbrandt was landing a couple of left hooks, but he was still getting tagged with jabs and straights while getting backed up. The pace of Font wasn’t fading either, while the condition of Garbrandt was getting worse.

Garbrandt had some pep in his step to begin the final round, but soon Font got right back to business. Rob was backing up Cody with more straight punches, and then blasted him with a smooth uppercut. A couple of solo punches got through for Garbrandt, but Font was doing the much better work.

Rob Font def. Cody Garbrandt by unanimous decision (50-45 x2, 48-47): Bantamweight
