Josh Taylor (18-0, 14 KOs) and Jose Ramirez (26-1, 17 KOs) put on a hell of a show in Las Vegas, but in the end all four major world boxing belts and the status as junior welterweight’s undisputed champion went to Scotland’s Taylor.
After a back-and-forth start to the fight, Taylor floored Ramirez with a pull counter left just seconds into round six. An even harder left uppercut by Taylor in round seven put Ramirez on his back and it looked like it might be a knockout blow. To Ramirez’s credit he got up but otherwise never truly recovered and despite a late rally, lost a unanimous decision (114-112 x3) and lost his WBC and WBO titles to Taylor.
Taylor becomes just the sixth undisputed champion in the four-belt era of boxing and he does it by coming to what was effectively enemy territory and putting Ramirez on the canvas twice. It was a really good fight and a hard-fought victory for Taylor against a fellow world-class opponent.
