Nate Diaz is open to a boxing match with YouTube star Jake Paul, just not right now.
Diaz is currently gearing up for a return to the UFC, but the Californian is confident he will fight Paul at some point in the future, possibly after the latter’s upcoming eight-round boxing match with Ben Askren in April.
“No, not at that moment, no, Diaz told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani when asked about a potential fight with Paul (h/t BJPenn.com). “But, at some point for sure.”
Diaz thinks Paul needs to be taught a lesson in the boxing ring following his derogatory comments towards Conor McGregor, Dillon Danis, and several other fighters in the MMA sphere.
The YouTuber turned boxer is 2-0 as a professional but has yet to test himself against another professional fighter.
“He was just talking some serious fighting words to Conor,” Diaz said. “When I said something it was because he was saying stuff to Conor and those are some real fighting words for a guy who is signed to fight in a real fight. You are challenging us to a boxing match with real fighting words. No one is going to speak, even Conor doesn’t want to give him any clout.
“Someone needs to tell this guy to shut up, I wasn’t trying to have anybody’s back. But, you are talking fighting words, it doesn’t make no sense when people do that,” Diaz continued. “It is like people talking like that and challenging somebody to a basketball (game). Boxing is just boxing it is only one-piece of a fight. So, someone is going to f**k you up if you don’t watch it.”
Paul vs. Askren will take place on April 17 at a TBD location while Diaz is expected to return to the octagon against either Dustin Poirier or Charles Oliveira.
