On the UFC’s so-called ‘Fight Island’ yesterday Conor McGregor experienced a first for him inside the MMA cage; a TKO loss. At UFC 257 the former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion was stopped in the second round by Dustin Poirier, a man McGregor TKO’d back in 2014.

Today McGregor took to twitter to share some of his reaction to the loss and also hint at what might be to come in the future.

“Thanks for the support everyone! Was not my night/morning in there but a great contest to improve on. I’m excited at the blockbuster trilogy I now have on my hands. Dustin is a hell of a competitor and I look forward to going again. God bless us all, happy Sunday.”

The loss dropped McGregor’s record at lightweight to 1-2 (and 3-3 in his last six). The Poirier fight comes over a year since McGregor’s last fight; a quick stoppage of Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 last year.

The Cerrone fight came after another year-plus hiatus for McGregor. That time on the sidelines came after he suffered a loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov, by submission, for the 155 lb title at UFC 229.

McGregor entered yesterday’s action under some controversy. Days before UFC 257 it was revealed that the Irishman was the subject of a lawsuit filed in Dublin. The suit accuses McGregor of rape. McGregor has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged with a crime in relation to this accusation.
