Max Holloway celebrated his 29th birthday on December 4. He’s spent nearly nine of those years battling under the UFC banner. While his first contest with the promotion, a February 2012 first-round submission defeat to Dustin Poirier, did not end well, Holloway bounced back in his second contest, a decision win over Pat Schilling and inserted his name in the UFC featherweight record book. Since then he picked up and defended the promotion’s 145-pound title. Holloway has also totally rewritten the UFC featherweight record book.
On Saturday, the former UFC featherweight champion looks to add to his legacy as perhaps the most accomplished fighter in the history of the 145-pound weight class, he also looks to end his two-fight losing skid when he faces Calvin Kattar in the main event of UFC on ABC – FIGHT ISLAND 7.
Holloway, riding a 13-fight featherweight winning streak, surrendered his crown to Alexander Volkanovski in December 2019 and followed that with a second loss to the new champion in July 2020. The only other time Holloway lost two fights in a row was when he dropped back-to-back decisions to Dennis Bermudez and Conor McGregor in 2013. He ended that skid with a second-round knockout win over Will Chope — another contest that earned Holloway a spot in the UFC featherweight record book.
The 32-year-old Kattar doesn’t have nearly the amount of mentions in the UFC record book that his adversary does, but he has momentum on his side heading into UFC Fight Island 7. Kattar who joined the UFC in 2017 is riding a two-fight winning streak heading into his matchup with the ex-champ. Kattar has knocked out Jeremy Stephens and taken a decision from Dan Ige in his two most recent outings. He looks to hand Holloway the first three-fight losing skid of his career and put his name in the discussion for a title shot on Saturday.
Before UFC Fight Island 7 takes place at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, here are some facts, stats and numbers for the matchup between Holloway and Kattar.
