A couple of weeks ago, reports out of New Zealand claimed that Michael Chandler’s UFC debut will be against number six-ranked Dan Hooker. The two top-tier 155-pounders are said to be facing each other at UFC 257 on January 23rd in Abu Dhabi.

It was all made official on Sunday night, according to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

Upon his UFC signing in September, Chandler made it clear that he only wants a top opponent for his debut. Preferably, someone in the top five.

“The Hangman” may just be a rank lower, but he is no walk in the park. The 30-year-old Kiwi is coming off a five-rounder against Dustin Poirier in June, in what many touted as another Fight of the Year candidate for 2020.

Chandler himself is fresh off an impressive performance in August when he knocked out former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson inside one round.

No announcements have been made yet but Hooker vs. Chandler will likely co-headline UFC 257. Topping off the event is the rematch between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier.
