UFC 254 saw top-ranked heavyweights collide in the form of the #7 rated, Alexander Volkov, and the #10 ranked, Walt Harris. It was Volkov’s night as he hurt Harris with a body kick in the second round, and then finished him off with ground strikes. Volkov looked composed tonight, weathering an early storm with solid defense, and then finding a way to sting his opponent and end the fight. Volkov is back in the win column and used his post-fight interview to ask for any opponent that will propel him further up the rankings.
Harris went right at Volkov with striking combos, finishing his punches with head kicks. Volkov blocked the flurries rather well and started to return his patented straight punches. Harris began to fade towards the end of the round, and Volkov stung him with a flurry. Harris shelled up, bit down, and started winging hooks back at Volkov to earn some space. It was a rather good round for Volkov. The second-round saw Volkov blast Harris with front kick to the gut, causing the American to yelp in agony. Volkov pounced with punches as Harris dropped down to the canvas, and the referee stepped in to wave off the bout.
