Report: Gilbert Burns replaces Thiago Alves against Gunnar Nelson at UFC Copenhagen

After making his welterweight comeback on short notice and soundly defeating then undefeated Alexey Kunchenko, Gilbert Burns wants to keep the ball rolling on the same fashion. Shortly after Thiago Alves announced he had to pull out of his bout against Gunnar Nelson due to injury, ‘Durinho’ quickly went on to Twitter and asked for the spot, and according to Combate’s Raphael Marinho, he got his wish.

In his last outing, Gilbert Burns (16-3) stepped in on a two-week notice to take on then undefeated Alexey Kunchenko back in August and won the fight via unanimous decision. The win extended Durinho’s current streak to three victories in a row, with wins over Mike Davis and Olivier Aubin-Mercier in the lightweight division. The 33-year-old’s last loss happened in July 2018, when he was knocked out by Dan Hooker.

Alternating wins and losses for his past three fights, Gunnar Nelson (17-4-1) will try to bounce back from a split decision loss to Leon Edwards back in March. The defeat came after a submission win over Alex Oliveira in December 2018, which was preceded by a knockout loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio in July 2017.

Now, Gunnar Nelson is expected to take on Gilbert Burns at UFC Fight Night 160, on September 28, in Copenhagen, Denmark. The card is scheduled to be headlined by a middleweight bout between contenders Jack Hermansson and Jared Cannonier.
