The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada was home to a mediocre night of fights. The card saw five (T)KOs, one submission, and six decisions, including one split-decision.
Performances of the Night: Johnny Walker, Diego Sanchez
Diego Sanchez would not be denied the opportunity to school a young pup in the ways of the warrior. Mickey Gall came in strong, throwing everything but the kitchen sink, but Sanchez waded right through those shots, getting the better of the younger man on the ground and eventually stopping him in the second round via a barrage of punches that forced the referee to step in and wave off the fight. Sanchez got the TKO win and $50,000 for his first TKO since 2008!
Johnny Walker once again put an early and violent end to his opponent, this time with a jumping knee that landed flush on Misha Cirkunov. He followed him down to the canvas and landed a few more bombs before the referee stepped in. It only took 36 seconds. Johnny Walker got the KO win and $50,000 for his incredibly short work. It is his 3rd performance bonus in just three fights in the UFC. Impressive much?!
*Side Note: Walker proceeded to dislocate his shoulder during his post-fight celebratory worm.
Fight of the Night: Garbrandt vs. Munhoz
Cody Garbrandt looked sharp in the early goings of his fight with Pedro Munhoz, but before long, Munhoz had figured out Dana White’s favorite fighter, standing in the pocket and trading hard leather. Both fighters took some haymakers, but it was Munhoz’s that ultimately put an early end to the fight. After chopping Garbrandt’s legs out from under him, he went toe-to-toe with the former champion, and for some inexplicable reason, Cody decided to stand and trade with “reckless abandonment” until he was dropped, then battered, forcing the referee to stop the fight. Pedro Munhoz got the KO victory and both men got $50,000 bonuses for their work.
