In his promotional debut, “Funky” Ben Askren submitted the UFC’s former welterweight champ Robbie Lawler on the UFC 235 PPV main card. However, there will be much debate over Herb Dean’s decision to stop the fight when it appeared as if Lawler wasn’t unconscious.
Askren shot in right away, but plot twist, it was Lawler who lifted up Askren and spiked him on the floor. Lawler landed several clean ground strikes before Askren worked his way back to his feet. Several knees to the body hit their mark for Lawler as Askren tried to stall against the cage. Askren got his takedown with about two-minutes remaining in the round and quickly went to the back. A really tight bulldog choke was locked up by Askren, and Dean thought that Lawler went unconscious and stopped the fight. That was not the case, as Lawler immediately protested the stoppage, but the result stands.
Askren remains undefeated at 19-0, and is finally in the UFC where he belongs.
