The UFC enters a new era tonight (with a brand new belt) with its debut on ESPN. The debut show to air on the UFC’s new broadcast partner is headlined by a champion vs. champion bout, which might just completely kill an entire division.
UFC Fight Night: Cejudo vs. Dillashaw sees UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo defending his crown versus UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw. If Dillashaw is able to beat Cejudo for the flyweight title there’s a good chance he’ll vacate the belt. After that the belt, division, and most of the fighters who compete at 125lbs could be booted from the promotion. No pressure Henry.
The co-main event tonight is the official UFC debut of Greg Hardy, who fights Allen Crowder. In 2014, Hardy was found guilty of assault and communicating threats to his then girlfriend. He was sentenced to 18 months probation and a 60-day jail sentence. Hardy appealed all this and requested a retrial, with a jury. The request was granted. The trial and charges against Hardy were then dropped when the victim refused to participate in the proceedings. The prosecutor in the case said they had “reliable information” that the victim was not participating because they had reached an agreement on a civil settlement with Hardy.
Also on the main card (which begins at 10:00PM ET on ESPN+) is Gregor Gillespie vs. Yancy Medeiros (lightweight), Joseph Benavidez vs. Dustin Ortiz (flyweight), Paige VanZant vs. Rachael Ostovich (flyweight), and Glover Teixeira vs. Karl Roberson (light heavyweight).
The prelim card starts at 8:00PM ET and is available on ESPN (not ESPN+). That portion of the event is headlined by Donald Cerrone vs. Alex Hernandez (lightweight). Also on the prelims is Joanne Calderwood vs. Ariane Lipski (flyweight), Alonzo Menifield vs. Vinicius Moreira (light heavyweight), and Mario Bautista vs. Cory Sandhagen (bantamweight).
The early prelims are not on UFC Fight Pass tonight, those are on ESPN+ instead. The three fight card features Dennis Bermudez vs. Te Edwards (lightweight), Belal Muhammad vs. Geoff Neal (welterweight), and Chance Rencountre vs. Kyle Stewart (welterweight).
