With the UFC light heavyweight title back in his possession, Jon Jones has attracted a good number of challengers, including those fighting outside of the 205-pound division. One of them is number four-ranked 145-pound fighter Alexander Volkanovski.
Volkanovski (19-1, with 14 wins by stoppage) recently called out current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones through a recent post on Twitter.
Unbeknownst to many, the 5-foot-6 Volkanovski was a rugby player in his younger years growing up in New South Wales in Australia and weighed 210 pounds. He transitioned into mixed martial arts in 2012 and began his career as a middleweight fighter.
Volkanovski gradually dropped down in weight and began fighting at 145 pounds in 2014, with a few more stints at lightweight over the next few years. He has since remained at featherweight upon his second fight in the UFC in 2017.
The 30-year-old fighter fought on the same card as Jones at UFC 232 late last month, where he scored a second-round TKO win over Chad Mendes. He also bagged an extra $50,000 for Fight of the Night honors.
As for Jones, he is reportedly slated to be back in action as early as UFC 235 in March where he will defend his title against Anthony Smith.
