UFC 232 results: Anderson gets freak TKO of Zingano, Yan dominates Silva de Andrade

The UFC 232 preliminary card is done and dusted. On Fox Sports 1, fans saw lightweight grappling wizards Ryan Hall submit the great B.J. Penn with a heel hook, bantamweight prospect Petr Yan styling on Douglas Silva de Andrade for a corner stoppage TKO, women’s featherweight Megan Anderson recorded her first UFC win with a bizarre kick to the eye TKO of Cat Zingano, and Walt Harris picked up a split decision victory over Andrei Arlovski in a dreadful heavyweight clash.

Here’s how the fights played out.

Walt Harris def. Andrei Arlovski by split decision (27-30, 29-28, 29-28) – Heavyweights

Harris was hellbent on throwing knockout punches in the opening round, particularly that southpaw right hook. Arlovski threw several low kicks and was just out of Harris’ range for the most part, but Harris did tag Arlovski with several clean shots towards the end of the frame. Arlovski was visibly frustrated with the lack of an eye poke call to start round two, as that’s what he argued in a similar situation to start the first round. Mike Beltran gave Harris a stern warning as there was no denying that he got Arlovski’s eye.

Harris scored a takedown on Arlovski a little bit after the restart, but couldn’t hold him down and the former UFC champion was soon back to his feet. Other than that? Clean strikes were hard to come by. and we saw a whole lot of staring and missing for the rest of the second round.

Action picked up in the final round when Harris rocked Arlovski with a powerful straight left, but was unable to properly follow-up and get the finish. After that? Pretty much little else to report outside of a very annoyed crowd booing them until the horn sounded. Harris has won two straight, while Arlovski has dropped three in a row.

Megan Anderson def. Cat Zingano by TKO (eye kick) at 1:01 of round 1 – Women’s Featherweights

The fight didn’t last very long and it was certainly an unusual outcome. Zingano was content to stay on the outside, throw kicks, and wait for her opportunity to take Anderson down. Unfortunately, the fight ended with Zingano unable to continue after the Australian threw a head kick that saw her big toe go right into Cat’s right eye. Zingano turned away in pain and that was the end of that. A really unlucky loss for Zingano, but it’s perfectly legal, as Anderson threw a valid strike and it just hit a really bad spot. It’s Anderson’s first UFC win, and ZIngano’s fourth loss in her last five.

Petr Yan def. Douglas Silva de Andrade by TKO (corner stoppage) at 5:00 of round 2 – Bantamweights

Silva de Andrade cracked Yan with a left hook, and the Russian responded with a head kick, showing off what fans expected from these two exciting strikers. Yan caught an Andrade kick and landed some shots on the ground, then connected on two left hands on his way up. Andrade looked for the overhand right, but found himself eating a 3-2 combination against the fence. Two well-timed rights backed Andrade up, as he threw a spinning backfist in retaliation and missed. As Yan got his offense flowing, Andrade worked a nice knee to the body and then a left hook, but seconds later the round ended with Yan taking the Brazilian down and in top position.

Andrade had huge problems defending the right hand of Yan, and Yan used that to set up a flying knee to the jaw that caught Andrade on the chin. The 25-year-old kept on the pressure and just about doubled over Andrade with a left hook to the body. Yan used a ten-finger guillotine to take Andrade into side control. Andrade eventually went after Yan’s legs but wound up in a headlock again, and Yan threw a brutal knee to the body before putting Yan back down. Yan dropped down some big elbows after a failed sweep, opening up a cut on Andrade’s eye.

The extended beating prompted Douglas’ corner to stop the fight in between rounds, the unquestioned right call. Yan is now 3-0 in the UFC, while Andrade drops to 3-3.
