On the UFC 231 PPV main card, the promotion’s #14 ranked welterweight Gunnar Nelson returned to the win column with a bloody second round submission of the #13 ranked Alex Oliveira.
Nelson clinched up right away and ate a bow to the back of the head. Oliveira held on to the cage to prevent a takedown, to which the referee stopped the fight to warn him. The fight resumed and Nelson got his takedown and went right to the back. Cowboy was able to spin around inside of the guard of Nelson and proceeded to drop serious punches. Nelson attacked a leg which brought the fight to a 50/50 position to close out the round.
It was Cowboy who pressed Nelson up against the cage to start the second stanza, and he even scored a brief takedown. The nose of Nelson began to bleed, but that didn’t stop him from sniffing out a takedown of his own. Cowboy gave up the full mount and ate some vicious elbows, opening up a gruesome cut. Cowboy tried to move but Nelson switched to the back and cinched up an RNC. Eek!
