The California State Athletic Commission has the fighter payouts for Saturday’s Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury pay-per-view event in Los Angeles, California. As expected, Wilder and Fury will be on their way to career paydays, with Wilder guaranteed $4 million to Fury’s $3 million. Both men are expected to get north of $10 million based on pay-per-view revenue splits, and Fury in particular might benefit from both the Showtime PPV and BT Sport Box Office in the UK. This is the first US PPV main event for both men, and Wilder is finally getting that big money fight he’s craved. His previous high was $2.1 million on regular Showtime vs. Luis Ortiz.
According to BoxingScene, the “floor” for this PPV in the US is 250,000 buys. Other outlets say Wilder is actually guaranteed $14 million to Fury’s $10 million.
As for the rest of what is a PPV undercard filled with mismatches, unified junior middleweight champion Jarrett Hurd is the next highest earner at $1 million, taking on England’s Jason Welborn in a clear tune-up for Hurd, who is coming off shoulder surgery after his win over Erislandy Lara.
Heavyweights Luis Ortiz and Travis Kauffman are getting six-figure purses, with Ortiz set for $375,000 to $125,000 for the heavy underdog Kauffman. Opening the PPV is English heavyweight prospect Joe Joyce against another sizable underdog in Joe Hanks, with Joyce’s purse listed at $40,000 to Hanks’ $50,000.
In all likelihood, Welborn and Joyce are making more money than what’s on the CSAC paysheet, with their UK promoters giving them extra checks that aren’t officially listed. Otherwise it makes no sense for the A-side Joyce to get paid less than his opponent. It is common for notable foreign fighters on US shows to be paid more than what’s written down. For example, Scott Quigg’s official purse against Oscar Valdez earlier this year was $100,000, but his actual package was closer to $500,000 when factoring in British TV money. Just creative accounting, I guess you could say. I doubt Welborn is making substantially more than just $30,000 with all of that said, seeing as he’s a tune-up opponent that’s likely going to be blasted out quickly by Hurd.
