Following his record-breaking win against Mike Perry last weekend at UFC Denver, Donald Cerrone has made it clear he wants to go back down to lightweight, and it appears the UFC is already lining up a “very exciting” opponent for ‘Cowboy.’
Cerrone defeated Perry by first round submission in the co-main event of UFC Denver to become the fighter with the most wins and most finishes in UFC history. Speaking to the media after the fight, Cerrone discussed his plans to drop down to 155 pounds.
“I don’t know if we can be anymore clear about it, can we? 155, I think the New Year Eve’s card will be cool, I’ll fight on Fight Pass I don’t give a sh-t, I’ll be the first fight of the night. But yeah let’s make a run, let’s train hard and be focused, let’s go get a motherf—king belt.
“I’m 182 pounds right now, that’s what I walked in at for fight week, this is heavy for me. When I’m at 155 pounds I’m usually around 176 pounds. I’m gonna have to hire a dietitian because that last five pounds sucks. Who I want [to fight]? Don’t care, but there is somebody they already came up and told me, it’s very exciting.”
Speaking about the fight with Perry, Cerrone discussed the action leading up to the submission, and how once he eventually secured the armbar he knew the fight was a wrap.
“I knew [Perry] was going to be really strong, but I figured he was going to be more explosive. When he tried to take me down I was like “You can have it, I’ll give it to you.” I seen on the clock there was 30-seconds left, he should of rolled the other way out of it, I don’t now why he didn’t. I felt it [his arm] pop before I went belly down so the rest was just tearing a chicken wing off, I was taking it home with me.
UFC 232, the New Year’s Eve card Cerrone showed interest in fighting on, takes place on December 29th at the T-Mobile Arena and will be headlined by a rematch between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson.
