Earlier this month, UFC megastar Conor McGregor expressed interest in a superfight with former pound-for-pound great Anderson Silva, praising ‘The Spider’ as ‘a legend in the game.’
”I would be interested in an Anderson Silva bout,” McGregor said ahead of his lightweight title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, which he lost via submission. “I swear to God. Anderson is a legend in the game.
Silva responded to McGregor in a recent interview with TMZ Sports, and said it’s a fight that UFC president Dana White definitely needs to consider. The former middleweight champion accepts McGregor’s challenge.
“I just waiting,” Silva told TMZ. “I accept the challenge for Conor.
“I think Dana needs to think about this. It’s two big guys in this sport, two big names. Two big legends, and, why not?”
“It’s not about money, Conor. It’s about martial arts challenge.”
Silva suggested that he fight ‘The Notorious’ at a catchweight of 180-pounds and hyped the potential bout as a ‘superfight.’
“I think 180 for me is good,” he said. “I think for Conor, too. Because that’s a superfight. It’s not about weight class.”
When asked about McGregor’s possible rematch with Nurmagomedov, who outclassed the Irishman for the majority of the fight at UFC 229, Silva was blunt and straight to the point.
“I don’t believe Conor win,” Silva said. “Definitely not. In a rematch, I don’t believe that. I believe in, Conor need to fight with me. That’s a good fight.”
According to SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh, McGregor reacted to the Khabib loss in the same way he did at UFC 196, where the former two-division champ was submitted by Nate Diaz and became ‘obsessed’ with a rematch. McGregor’s wish was granted and the Dubliner ended up beating Diaz via majority decision in the Fight of the Year epic at UFC 202.
Dana White says that he’d like to make Khabib vs. Tony Ferguson next over an immediate rematch for McGregor. Silva, however, could be an option for the UFC for Conor’s next bout.
