Fans won’t get to see budding prospect Sean O’Malley fight Jose Quinonez this weekend, as the 23-year-old has been forced from UFC 229 after failing a drug test.
That’s according to O’Malley’s Instagram, where the bantamweight talent posted that he had flagged for a potential anti-doping violation after testing positive for a banned substance.
O’Malley broke the news on social media because of USADA’s new policy. The anti-doping agency will no longer publicize potential anti-doping violations until cases have been fully investigated and resolved. This is to protect potentially innocent fighters from negative backlash.
‘Sugar’ states that he never had any intention of cheating and hopes to get the issue resolved as soon as possible.
O’Malley hasn’t fought since his Fight of the Night win over Andre Soukhamthath at UFC 222, where he was stretchered from the Octagon after injuring his foot in the third round. Despite his injury, O’Malley went on to win a unanimous decision and dazzled fans with his performance.
UFC 229, which will feature the highly anticipated lightweight bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor, takes place this Saturday, October 6 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
