It seems like the UFC is moving on from the idea of booking Alexander Gustafsson in a title bout with Yoel Romero. According to ESPN, the promotion is looking to book a lucrative rematch with former champ Jon Jones instead.
“It’s one of the greatest light heavyweight title fights in history and I expect the rematch to be the same!!!!” Dana White told ESPN. While far from finalized, the company president states that they want the bout to be part of the UFC 232 line up on December 29.
Jones, whose suspension got cut short due to the “snitching” clause, will be eligible to return to competition late October.
Both fighters have expressed their interest in the rematch, in recent interviews. Jones said he would “love” to fight him again and “take him seriously this time.” Gustafsson, on the other hand, called for the match up saying Jones “can cheat if he wants,” he’d still put a beating on him.
The pair originally fought back in September 2013. The back-and-forth contest was edged out by Jones, who took a decision to defend his light heavyweight title.
