Early this week, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley stated that he was willing to return as early as UFC 230 to defend his title against Colby Covington. However, that is dependent on whether or not he will be receiving clearance from his doctors.
As he told ESPN in a recent interview, Woodley dislocated his thumb during his most recent title defense against Darren Till early this month, where he tore three ligaments.
”They are doing a shoestring surgery to provide more stability for my hand and minimize the potential arthritis,” Woodley said, speaking about the extent of his injury.
Woodley also stated that the said procedure is scheduled for mid-October, and according to his doctors, he will be kept in the sidelines for 8 to 12 weeks. This timeframe kills off any possibility of him being part of UFC 230, which has yet to have a headliner fight.
UFC 230 takes place on November 3rd at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The co-headliner fight will likely be the lightweight tiff between Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz, which the former proposes to be for the non-existent 165-pound title.
