Hello. This is Chris, and today on MMA Squared we’re talking about an albatross. The denotation of the word: n. Any of several large web-footed birds constituting the family Diomedeidae, chiefly of the oceans of the Southern Hemisphere, and having a hooked beak and long narrow wings.

I’m going somewhere with this metaphor. Stick with me.

Its connotation is more appropriate (though the wingspan is a factor here too): n.A constant, worrisome burden.n.An obstacle to success.

A perfect fighter. A perfect a**hole.

With that in mind we must wonder: if Daniel Cormier wins the heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 226, will it exorcise the demon of Jon Jones?

Can a man who has dedicated his life to competition forgive himself for being human? For being fallible? For being less than perfect?

Jones vs Cormier 2 was 2017’s Fight of the Year.

It’s a difficult question because winning both titles would have a profound effect on Cormier’s legacy.

And if Cormier and Jones never fight again, it would serve as a parting shot in the UFC’s greatest rivalry.

Sure I could have written “one of” the greatest rivalries, but disagreement gets more traction.

There will be a battle in the Octagon, but there is a war going on behind the screens.

As always, this is Chris. Take care of yourself and I’ll talk to you next week.

Sorry Stipe, you just didn’t do well with the focus group. But if you win, I’ve got a piece ready to go about the secret war between Miocic and Dana White.
