Last week, SBG Ireland striking coach Owen Roddy revealed that the negotiations for the title fight between UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor are “brewing up nicely.” Over the weekend, the team’s head coach John Kavanagh supported his fellow trainer’s statement.
In an interview with analyst Robin Black, Kavanagh stated that he is expecting the said matchup to take place before 2018 ends.
“It’s the obvious fight, as his coach and as a fan. As a fan of MMA, it’s the fight I want to see as well,” Kavanagh said (transcript via MMA Fighting). “I would almost bet anything — almost bet anything — that fight happens before the end of the year.”
“I can’t imagine it not happening.”
“The Notorious” is still dealing with the mess he made back in April at UFC 223. He is scheduled to appear back in court in Brooklyn on July 26th, but as far as the date of his UFC return goes, everything is still up in the air.
Khabib, meanwhile, is having some downtime in Dagestan, spending the last month celebrating Ramadan with friends and family. However, he did guarantee that he would “destroy” McGregor if and when they meet inside the Octagon.
